Waltz
Several historical references exists depicting a sliding or gliding dance dating back to the 16th Century. In 1580, French philosopher Montaigne describes watching a dance performed in Augsburg that's similar to the waltz we know it today -- with dancers holding each other so closely that their faces touched. Beginning in 1698, an early form of the Waltz had come to be accepted by high society as the Austrian Court in Vienna, and continued its evolution among the peasants of Bavaria, Tyrol, and Styria in the form called Walzer, a dance for couples. The waltz eventually became fashionable in Vienna around the 1780s, spreading to many other countries in the years to follow.
