The Sanskrit word yoga literally means "yoke", thus it can be described as a system whose purpose is to promote self-discipline as a 'yoke' in order to achieve balance. The term has come to include the full range of physical exercises within the system to promote balance in the physical plane - or simply put, physical fitness.
The physical aspect of yoga have a tradition dating back to the 15th century, but it came to prominence in the West in the 60s. Since then, yoga has been used as supplementary therapy for diverse conditions such as cancer, diabetes, asthma, and AIDS.
